About us
The Familia Moja Foundation is a NGO organisation established in Zanzibar in 2022.
Our primary aim is to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds break the cycle of poverty through education.
Our secondary aim is to provide free food and healthcare to improve the health and wellbeing of these children
Ages 0-6 are critical years in brain development, setting the stage for the rest of a child’s life.
But in Zanzibar, only 13% attend Day Care and Nursery (Pre-Primary)! Those that miss Pre-Primary are significantly less likely to go to Primary School, and are more likely to struggle to catch-up and have a higher drop-out rate.
Poverty & lack of access to any free, good quality Pre-School is the main barrier to attendance.
Our Nursery & Day Care School will help ensure local children get the opportunity to progress.
Bwejuu is comprised of a number of small, low income villages. Whilst Bwejuu has benefitted in recent years from tourism, many of the families live from hand to mouth and work hard to provide for the basic needs of their family.
The children that will attend our Nursery & Day Care School will come from these local villages – many of which are within a short walk making it easier for the children to get to school. Our premises are located in a quiet and safe location about 300 meters from the main road that is easily accessible to the local children.
It is also within 5 minutes of two local Medical Centres providing quick, cost effective and high quality healthcare for the children.
“It takes a village to raise a child” is an African proverb which refers to the importance of the role the whole community plays in providing a positive environment in which children can flourish.
In order to play our part in creating the right community we not only need to provide the free education, food and healthcare for the children we care for but to work with the local community as a whole.
To this end we have already engaged with the local Bwejuu Development Community to ensure we can pool thinking and resources to a common goal.
