Nursery Sponsorship Program
Only about 5% of children in Zanzibar attend Day Care, and it is estimated that 75% of children never attend Preschool at all.
Our students come from very challenging backgrounds and without financial support they are unable to start their education until Primary School, by which time they are already behind and will struggle to keep up due to the large class sizes and poor facilities in the majority of Primary Schools in Zanzibar.
Our aim is to try and ensure that more children from Zanzibar get the education they deserve at Preschool level, which ensures they are properly prepared academically, physically and emotionally when they start Primary School.
Familia Moja wants to ensure that the children who attend our school can do so free of charge and the project is sustainable. Many other NGO’s charge a contribution fee, which however small means the poorest and most needy families cannot afford so their children miss out on the opportunity to get the education they deserve.
Through our Nursery Sponsorship Program (NSP) we can generate funds to not only help ensure a child’s education, food and healthcare is covered, but also provide additional support financially to the family by buying them their school uniform (including shoes) and a backpack.
Selection Process & Sponsorship Package
SELECTION
Students are selected based on their families living circumstances. Our selection process involves discussing the families circumstances with the local village leader (Sheha) and, if necessary, home visits to fully assess and understand their family circumstances – income, living conditions and their parents attitude to education. At this stage of their education their is no need to select students level of ability academically as most will have had no education to date. We want to give every child an equal opportunity to develop and flourish.
SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE
Our sponsorship package is very straightforward and costs $20/month or $200/year if the full year is paid in advance (as there are additional bank and admin charges incurred from managing a monthly payment process).
Sponsored children get free education, free food (currently porridge at break and clean drinking water), free healthcare (medical, optical & dental), free school uniform (t-shirt with logo, shorts/skirt, socks and shoes) and a free backpack.
What You Get as a Sponsor
Apart from knowing you have given a child the amazing gift of education, as a sponsor you will receive two personalised email updates a year covering the child’s performance and a drawing of card made by your sponsored child.
You are most welcome to send us a letter and pictures via email updating the child on you and your families news – the children love to receive these messages and to get to know more about their sponsors and their families, which can also be useful additional learning by exposing them to life from different countries and cultures.
You will also get a “Thank You” letter from Familia Moja at the start of your sponsorship
